Funny?

So everybody's heard of Sasha Baron Cohen, the Jewish comic behind "Borat." And though I'll probably never see the movie, I can't help but be fascinated.

Yaakov and I saw the following clip and we both laughed hysterically. We laughed at the dopey rednecks, at the absurdity of the song. There's something wickedly funny about him - as a Jew - singing this.
But then I thought, "Maybe this isn't funny." I mean, those patrons are really singing with gusto!

I'd like to hear your opinion.

sorry guys, i lost your comments when i had to refresh the post (the video shut down).

basically, one of you said you didn't like it ("bad karma"). the other one said borat was a genius for exposing america for the dumbasses we all are.

i'd love to hear more feedback on the issue, and i apologize again.

i heard that this was not actors at all- an actual real live bar full of red necks. i think this "humor" requires alot of sophistication to catch onto- sure, many sophisticated thinkers would think this Sasha is funny- but for us slow poke Yidden- who don't watch movies or tv, don't read regular newspapers and generally work hard at focussing on the emett of this life and our role to establish a dwelling place for Him in this scuzzball world-this type of irony seems weird- i got goosbumps. he's playing with fire!

I did see Borat. The movie was outrageous. I had to close my eyes in parts even as an open minded, progressive liberal. I found some of the antisemitic humor disturbing but some of it was still funny. I don't know if my discomfort came from being an observant jew or just a decent person (i.e., if another religous group was equally satired). Like anything else, the significance lies in how you interpret it. The film certainly challenges us to examine our prejudices and fears about cultural identity, religion (it pokes as much if not more fun at evangelical christians) and political correctness.
